Have you tried a USB headset? That doesn't use the onboard sound. Bought a new USB headset, and it does appear to resolve issue 1 which, as stated, is the more important issue Trouble is, I had to bite the bullet and get one of those cushy supra-aural ones that feels like two heating elements attached to a vice grip.

On the bright side, the next time I go home to see my folks in Wisconsin, I can get some cheese for my whine. XD Unless I pick up another soundcard, however, I don't think I'll resolve the 2nd issue, and I suspect a different soundcard would resolve both issues while still letting me use the original headset I had.
